our publication process

The full publication process, from initial receipt of submission to final publication, takes approximately 6-8 months. Our process is typically as follows:

1. Submission (rolling, with Fall cut-off)

  • Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, with a cut-off date typically set in September or October for publication in the following spring/summer.

  • Articles should follow the formatting and submission requirements set out here.

  • Articles are to be submitted to the Submission Manager via this form. Submitting through the form ensures a blind internal review process.

  • The Submissions Manager will confirm receipt of submission with the author.

2. Internal review (3-5 weeks)

  • The Editorial Team, comprised of the Editor-in-Chief, Executive Editor and Associate Editors, will conduct an anonymous internal review and recommend that each submission either proceed to external review, or be rejected at this stage.

  • The Submissions Manager will communicate the outcome of the internal review to the author(s).

3. External peer review (5-10 weeks)

  • At least two external reviewers for each submission will be secured based on subject matter expertise, availability, willingness, and taking into account any conflicts of interest or recommended reviewers indicated by the author(s) on the submission form. The external review process is double-blind.

  • Peer reviewers complete a peer review form and submit their comments to the Submissions Manager, selecting one of the following recommendations for the article:

    • Accept for publication as is;

    • Accept for publication with minor revisions;

    • Accept for publication with major revisions;

    • Revise and resubmit; or

    • Reject.

  • If there is a significant discrepancy between the reviewers’ reports, the Editorial Board, at its discretion, may secure an additional peer reviewer to offer an additional opinion.

4. Final publication decision (rolling)

  • Upon receipt of the reviewers’ reports, the Editorial Team will review all recommendations and comments and make a final decision as to whether or not to extend an offer of publication, and if so, on what conditions.

  • The Submissions Manager will communicate final publication decisions to authors, and provide authors with anonymized copies of the reviewers’ reports.

  • Authors who accept their offers of publication will be given approximately one month to revise their submission and incorporate reviewer feedback before the revised submission is returned to the Editorial Team.

5. Internal edit (3-6 weeks)

  • The Editorial Team will cite check all references and undertake a substantive edit of all submissions for clarity and flow, as well as copyediting for spelling and grammar.

  • Edited submissions will be turned over to different editors for a second round of editing.

6. Typesetting and proofing (3-6 weeks)

  • Each article will be formatted and typeset for digital publication.

  • Final proofs will be provided to authors for approval.

  • Authors will be given the opportunity to provide feedback and approvals on proofs prior to publication.

7. Publication

  • All articles will be published and available here on the TMU Law Review website.

  • The volume will be disseminated to other third-party open access databases.
